EverQuest is a pc-based Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, or MMORPG, for short. EverQuest, commonly called EQ, is considered to be one of the first games of its type. While technically, there were previous MMORPGs released, EverQuest was the first one that actually caught on, and truly became “massively multiplayer”. EQ was released in March of 1999, at a time when video games were not yet popular, and the idea of internet gaming was far from common knowledge.
For those not familiar with online gaming and MMORPGs, essentially, an MMORPG is a virtual world in which players from all around the world can interact with each other, over the internet. These games are as close to real life as video games will ever get. They have many of the traits that the real world does, such as trade, war, economies, and even inflation! Most MMORPG games, including EverQuest, are what are known as “sandbox” games. A sandbox game is a game in which you can roam around the virtual world, doing whatever you please. There are storylines and quests to do, but you can do them at any time, or you can simply skip them and run around your virtual sandbox.
EverQuest is a great game, and the basic structure of it has become the norm for most MMORPGs. The game starts out with you creating a character (called an avatar), and choosing your avatar’s occupation, or class. The class you choose will majorly affect your future game play, so choose wisely. Once you have chosen your character’s race, characteristics, and class, you are ready to start playing.
The basic concept is simple: play the game, and level up, gaining new items, skills, and power as you progress. Virtually everything you do in the game will earn you experience, which in turn will cause you to gain levels. The majority of the time you spend playing EverQuest will be spent completing quests. Quests are tasks or jobs that you do for other people, in exchange for either money, or experience (known as EXP or XP). Quests generally come from Non-player characters (NPCs), but quests or jobs can also be issued by human players. EverQuest allows players to interact with each other through player Guilds, in which players join together and complete quests, and do other activities. There is also a Player vs. Player (PVP) server, where you can duel other live players, using your avatars. The winner will be able to loot his defeated enemy’s body, thus gaining money and items.
Once you have learned the basics of the game, it is time to start truly enjoying your experience. You will learn quite quickly that Platinum, or Plat, is the lifeblood of EverQuest. Plat is the money of EQ, and is used in almost every trade. Most games have some sort of currency, but few have a trade system like EverQuest’s. Keep in mind that everyone who starts playing EQ starts at level 1, with little to no money. They slowly work their way up through the ranks, gaining money as well as EXP. But what if there was a way to bypass such dull, boring things such as gathering furs? Would people be willing to pay real-world money for numbers on a computer screen? Apparently, they would. As soon as this interesting fact was learned, players began to capitalize on their hobby-turned-job.
It started off with people selling their account when they were bored of the game and did not want their countless hours of game play to go to waist. Characters were sold from anywhere between $10 and $500, or even more. No one likes to be a newbie, so there were plenty of consumers, hungry to purchase these digital products for real money. Once people discovered they could actually make money playing their favorite game, the real-life trading began to grow. Players began selling not only accounts, but Platinum, as well as in-game items. eBay and other online marketplaces were the main grounds for most of these transactions, and since there was nothing in the EverQuest terms, nor the eBay terms, concerning these types of trades, nothing was done to stop these transactions.
This strange phenomenon hit the main stream, through an article in a popular magazine. In the article, the author told the story of an economic analyst, who in his spare time played EQ. Soon enough, the economist began to notice these sales of digital products for real world funds. He was immediately interested, and began to analyze his findings. Amazingly, he found that people playing EverQuest could actually be making, on average, $3.42 USD per hour. If you will, consider that $3.42/hour the minimum wage, which is considerably more than the minimum wage in many countries. The economist also calculated the average income over a year for all players. His results were amazing; the average income was $2,266 per capita! Considering this, EverQuest actually became the 77th richest country in the world, and it wasn’t even real!
While this is a strange concept to wrap your mind around, it is the truth. A video game had become the 77th richest country in the world, far richer than India, China, Bulgaria, and many more countries. There are an estimated 195 counties in the world today, so 77th place is considerably high.
Online trading of Plat and other goods on EverQuest still exists today, but it has lost some popularity. With new games coming out, EverQuest’s fan base is slowly shrinking, as people start playing other games. But if you are interested in EverQuest, the game still has lots of dedicated users.
